The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Romance
Throughout this cartoon adventure for preteens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering baby teeth of sleeping children and leaving gold under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more interested in the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly creature he expected.
An Unlikely Bond and Common Enemy
The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s perfectly appropriate for children). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, prone to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.
Of course, such a setup requires a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression
There aren’t very many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but are not mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.
A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
