Labuschagne Omitted from Australian ODI Team Against Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, as high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected selection.

Recent Form Lead to Exclusion

The right-hander was left out from the one-day international side after being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a best innings of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

There have been indications of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia search for a fix to their opening batting issues.

Pace Additions and Injury Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he works to regain fitness from a back injury by the time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Schedule

Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
