Ex-President Donald Trump has stated that US military assets struck a "major facility" in the South American country in recent days. However, the former president withheld information about the exact purpose or site of the strike, and officials have issued no additional clarification from his administration.
Vague Remarks Made In a Talk Show
"We just destroyed – I don't know if you saw – they have a major complex, where the ships originate. Recently, we destroyed it. So we targeted them decisively," Trump allegedly told Republican donor and businessman John Catsimatidis in a recent interview.
Possible Implications of a Verified Strike
Should a US strike were to be verified, it would represent the initial ground target hit since the US Department of Defense began a buildup of US strike forces in the region to halt narco-trafficking operations that the Trump administration claims operate under the direction of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
The stated mission of the force deployment has transformed into a blockade aimed at stopping the country's crude oil shipments.
Social Media Video and Official Statements
Trump has for some time stated that US forces are ready to escalate the operations by attacking objectives within Venezuela, a strategy that would in theory require congressional approval.
A clip shared on social media on 24 December purportedly showed an detonation allegedly from an industrial area in Zulia state. However, the video or the facility has not been confirmed by third parties.
An official from Trump's team allegedly informed a media outlet that the president was describing a drug facility in his comments.
Response and Current Military Posture
The Caracas administration has not commented on the alleged strike Trump described. Additionally, there have been no independent reports from Venezuela about it.
The deployment of US military in the area – a position certain officials have termed a sea blockade – constitutes the broadest maritime enforcement action of the Trump era.
Sources have stopped short from describing the operation as a full blockade, but have stated that about 15,000 personnel are positioned across the Caribbean and the Gulf, including a carrier strike group, F-35 aircraft, and Coast Guard cutters to enforce existing economic sanctions.
